Our latest Map Series has two State / Territory A0 Postcode Map versions, plus the State Capital City A1 Postcode Map. What's more, all are updated to the very latest Australia Post definitive database level, that's almost 400 updates and additions in all States and Territories, since the Map Series was released in October 2006! Below is a summary of what's included with the latest Pro product line:
Low Resolution. This version deploys a 1:5 million scale background image for the main map, plus a combination of 1:1 million and 1:250,000 scale background images for the inset maps. This combination facilitates clarity of major towns and geographic features in the background maps, whilst keeping file sizes small enough for fast display and searching even on older laptop and office machines. | |
High Resolution. The High Resolution version uses a 1:1 million scale background image for the main map plus a combination of 1:250,000 and 1:1 million scale images for the detailed inset maps. It provides much more detail in the main map background than the Low Resolution version, but still keeps file size small enough for acceptable display and search speeds on older computers. Display and search on well-specified modern machines is very fast. For users who wish to print a paper copy, this would be the version to use. |
Capital City. Each State and Territory Capital City in large A1 PDF format. Ideal for users whose interest is confined to metropolitan regions. The City Maps use the same high resolution 1:250,000 background images as the State / Territory High Resolution versions. All the detail you'll need including searchable Postcodes and places, with the benefit of smaller file sizes for super fast rendering and searches, even on laptop and older machines. The Capital City Map Series can be purchased separately if preferred, check them out here.. |

Our Australian Postcode Map Series and Australian Postcode Map Series Pro are presented in Adobe .PDF format. Interactive search by Postcode, suburbs and towns. You will require Adobe Acrobat Reader v6.0 or later, or an equivalent application to use your maps. The product series is available for each State / Territory of Australia, for each major metropolitan capital city, and as a discounted compilation for our whole nation. These products bring many of the advantages of sophisticated GIS programs but without the expense and complexity. Postcode area maps are what you need and this series delivers! All Map Series products include both High and Low resolution versions for added convenience and utility. In the Map Series Standard editions, the Low resolution versions allow rapid display and searching on most computers, while the High resolution version provides a high level of background map detail (combination of 1:1 million for the State / Territory base map and 1:250,000 for the inset maps). Our Postcode Map Series Pro provides both State / Territory versions in Low and High resolution PLUS the relevant Capital City product(s) are included to complete the Pro product package. This series represents the very best in contemporary Australian Postcode mapping and is exceptional value. Take a tour of the product.
Our Australian GIS Postcode Data products are available for individual States / Territories, and as a discounted compilation for our whole nation. They are available in most widely used digital GIS formats (ESRI .shp; MapInfo Mif/Mid; and KML for use with the amazing and free Google Earth - please see the Supplementary License Conditions for supply in Google KML format). The product list can be accessed here. These are suitable for a large range of advanced marketing and business analysis applications within a geographic information system (GIS) application. If you haven't heard of GIS before, we have a Quick Introduction to GIS which you may find worth a look, in order to help you decide which of our products best meet your needs. GIS Data products are maintained regularly and are up to date for current 2012 Australia Post revisions. You can see some examples of their use here. For users new to GIS and who would like some help getting started, you may be interested in our GIS software support options.
Many customers wish to have their own data integrated with our Postcode Data; sales figures and franchise territories are typical examples, you can see some examples here. If your project requires use of our Postcode Data to generate tabular output, rather than actual maps or supply of the digital Data Product, the rate is 40% of the listed GIS Data Product price. So for example if you have a sales analysis of NSW with output as spreadsheets in mind, the cost would be; time * rate + ($1360 Small Business user / $2040 Organisational user * 0.4) + GST. There is an overview of typical stages and cost components for such tasks here. if you'd like us to prepare a sample or draft output for you, we can do so. Please see the note on preparation of Draft or Sample Maps / Output on our Terms and Conditions Page here.
Of course if you'd prefer to undertake the work in-house, you will need the appropriate GIS Postcode Data Product and a suitable GIS Software application.

The upgrade cost from Standard to Pro Map Series products is: Product price difference + 20% + GST and Shipping for the upgrade. For example if you initially purchased PC002NSWACT_Smb and wish to upgrade to PC002NSWACT_SmbPro, it will cost $775.50 - $620.00 (= $155.50) + 20% = $186.60 + GST and shipping. This is a sensible and affordable way to meet your growing requirements; just for comparison, the Sydney and Canberra Capital City products alone would cost $700 if purchased separately for small business deployment, and these comprise only part of the Pro upgrade package! To upgrade, simply e-mail us your requirements and include your original invoice number. We'll return to you an upgrade invoice and ship your new product - it's that easy!
If your business needs begin to exceed the Map Series product capability, you can easily upgrade to the equivalent GIS Data product. The cost to do this is 60% of the equivalent GIS Data product*. For example if you have bought the Organisational License for the NSW / ACT Map Series PC002NSWACT_Org, you will have paid $1050. To upgrade to the NSW / ACT GIS Data product PC002NSWACTDAT_Org will be an extra $2040 * 0.6 = $1224. All up then your total purchases will have been $1050 + $1224 = $2274. The full price of PC002NSWACTDAT_Org is $2040, so for an additional $234 you will have enjoyed maximum benefit of the NSWACT Map Series product throughout your organisation, until such a time as your needs became such that the GIS Data version became essential. Of course, you will also continue to enjoy the benefits of your original Map Series product. We think this is a very fair deal.
This upgrade path is available only for equivalent products in the different series. Small Business Limited Map Series to Small Business Limited GIS Data equivalent, Small Business Map Series to Small Business GIS Data, or Organisational License Map Series to Organisational License GIS Data equivalents.
To upgrade a sale discounted Map Series Product, you keep the discount! Upgrade cost is the same as for the list priced item.
*Please note: Upgrade path only available for State and Territory Map Series, it is not available for our Capital City Map Series. Users wishing to upgrade from a Capital City Map product to a GIS Data product can choose either the full GIS data product for the State of interest, or consider a custom postcode data range.
You simply need to pay the difference between the Small Business Limited and upgrade License of choice. For example to upgrade to Small Business License will cost $620 (PC002NSWACT_Smb) - $440 (PC002NSWACT_SmbLtd) = $180. If your business really takes off and your staff numbers grow to over 100 employees, you'll simply need to repeat the process from your existing Small Business Licence to an Organisational License. Again, we don't think a fairer deal is possible.
You will need to advise us of your invoice number to take advantage of these upgrade options. We strongly recommend you keep a printed copy of both your Invoice(s) AND Passwords, as a precaution against accidental deletion or system failure. If you do loose your details, we can attempt to recover your details for an additional charge of $30 + tax.

Pricing. We aim to offer quality products at competitive prices. In the product list below, prices for the PDF Map Series Standard are shown in pink, the PDF Map Series Pro are shown in green, and for the GIS Data Series are shown in light blue. For perspective, here is the last published price list for Australian Postcode area data made available by Commonwealth Government agencies (Initially the Commonwealth mapping agency Geoscience Australia, and for a brief period until withdrawal from the market, Australia Post). Prices shown exclude GST (Australian customers only).
MapMakers Price Guarantee: We are confident our Postcode Map and Data Series represent the very best in value, currency and functionality. In the unlikely event you find an equivalent product at a verifiable cheaper price, we will beat it by twenty percent - guaranteed.
Small Business, Small Business Limited, or Organisational License?
For deployment within your organisation, you can choose either the..
| Small Business License (100 employees or fewer), unrestricted use within your Small Business, or.. | |
| Small Business - Limited (100 employees or fewer), restricted to installation on not more than three computers. |
Or the..
| Organisational License (more than 100 employees, a Franchise, or where the product or derivatives are to be made available via Internet or Intranet). Unrestricted use within your organisation. It doesn't matter that only a small team may be directly engaging with the product(s) as benefits flow to an organisation as a whole. |
Our License structure is designed to provide optimum deployment flexibility within your named organisation. If you believe none of our standard Licensing options meet your own particular circumstances, please e-mail Sales, with a brief explanation of your situation and we will endeavour to assist.
Here is a list of products by State and Territory, plus
the custom postcode range (Standard Series Data products only, the Census Enhanced Series is on its own page
here) to help you quickly find what you need:
|
Ordering: For your convenience, we have included a PayPal shopping option on the right hand side of the product list below; currently accepts MasterCard, VISA, or an existing PayPal account. A small PayPal service charge is included in the final checkout price for this option. For us to invoice you directly (eliminating the PayPal service fee), simply e-mail us (see note about e-mail addresses) including the product ID of the product(s) you require. Please include your shipping address when you e-mail an order, this will speed up the order process significantly. If you are ordering a GIS Data product, please specify your required format (if you are unsure, tell us which GIS software you will be using and we will select an appropriate format. We will advise you of our recommendation for your review and approval, prior to processing your order). If you are ordering GIS Data products using PayPal, we will communicate with you via e-mail to select your preferred format.
| Note; Please DO NOT use an anonymous e-mail address such as gmail, hotmail, yahoo, msn, as these are automatically deleted owing to the growing problem of spam originating from these sources - if you haven't heard from us after e-mailing an order this is almost always the reason - please check your default "from" address and resubmit your order, or give us a call) |
Payment: Our Postcode Map Series, Data Products and derivatives including tabular output, require pre-payment. Once your order has been received, we will return a Tax Invoice to you, including our bank details for electronic funds transfer. If you are using the PayPal shopping cart, the process is automated - simply follow the instructions through the shopping process, to final checkout. In either case, your product will normally ship the same business day, meaning you will typically receive it within one or two business days of ordering.
Your products are protected by an encryption key: As soon as your funds appear in either our bank or PayPal accounts, you will receive your password via e-mail. You will be asked to enter your password during the product installation process. Please keep your password safe!

Australian Postcode Area Data Complete Organisational License |
This option allows you to pick and choose Postcode Areas from anywhere in Australia to meet your specific business needs. This may be of particular interest if your area of operation is confined to a region, a city or two, or just a single Postcode.
How it works. Send an e-mail to Sales including either a marked-up scanned map showing area of interest, OR an attached spreadsheet or database table listing each postcode required and ideally its State or Territory as a separate column. Also please specify your required data format (if it is not listed in the third column of the table below, we can almost certainly produce it, please contact us for more information). The State or Territory may be required as some Postcodes can and do legitimately occur in more than one State / Territory. If you prefer not to include a State or Territory in your list, you will receive all Postcode Areas with that designation, so you may receive more Postcode Areas than there are unique postcodes in your original list. Your custom postcode areas will be supplied as an encrypted executable file, requiring pre-payment for release of your encryption key.
If you require a custom map based on your selection, our Custom Mapping Service is available to you.
Owing to the unique nature of this option, our Postcode Update Service is not available. The only licensing option is Organisational.
Number of Postcode Areas Required |
Price per Postcode Area (+ GST if applicable) |
Available formats |
| First Postcode Area | $30 | ESRI .shp MapInfo Mif/Mid Google Earth .KML |
| Second to tenth Postcode Area | $15 | |

Shipping and handling is $16.50 ea.
Once you receive your product(s), installation is a breeze. Double click the NAME_Postcode_Maps.exe file(s) on your CD / DVD. You will be guided through a series of simple steps to extract your new maps to a location of your choosing on your local hard drive.
· You will be asked to supply a password during this process. Please E-mail us using the following text in the subject line, simply add your product invoice number in place of <your invoice number>:
o Password request <your invoice number>
· Your maps will be extracted to the location you specify during this process. If you do not specify a location, they will be extracted to your windows default temporary folder. We recommend that you create a folder specifically for your Postcode maps and navigate to that folder during the installation process.
· For users purchasing Postcode Map Series product(s), you are acknowledging that you have purchased the necessary Geoscience Australia 250K background image product licence from Geoscience Australia and exonerate MapMakers Australia from any attendant copyright responsibilities.
| Using the
maps. This is designed to be simple. Commence with the low resolution version of
your map. This is a relatively small file which will display quickly on most modern PCs. Open the file either by double clicking, or using your Readers File/open menu. It should look similar to this showing the full extent of your map. Once you are ready to start searching for Postcodes, it is a good idea to zoom in to a smaller area using the zoom tool illustrated.. |
![]() |
| You will see greater detail.. | ![]() |
| Now click on the search tool, it is located as shown right... This will open a special area in your Reader in which you can enter the value of the postcode you are interested in. In this example a postcode 2340 has been entered. Next click the search button... Your map will automatically be adjusted so that the postcode you have searched for is in the centre of the map displayed. Zoom in or move around to reveal the details you are looking for... |
![]()
|
| In many cases your postcode of interest will be present in one or more inset maps in addition to the main map. When your search finds such an area, the list will include an entry for each occurrence. By clicking on each you will be automatically taken to a different level of detail as depicted in the inset maps. | ![]() |
| In metropolitan areas, the detail of
our postcode areas can be seen in the image to right. The area shown is part of the
PC002NSWACTDAT product and is an area approximately 15 x 15 kilometres, to the north and
east of Parramatta. The background image is a "Google Earth" image. |
![]() |
| This example shows a sample of our
Victorian Postcode Area data embedded live in a Google
Map. Click the various postcode areas to see their detail, or change the background to see satellite imagery or terrain! |
|
| Owing to the "open" nature of the Google community, there is a
Supplementary License Agreement required for supply of our Data Series in Google KML
format. The License wording is illustrated here.
This is the PC005SADAT product when deployed within Google Earth.. Our Postcode Area products will open immediately within Google Earth when requested in KML format. This view has placemarks added for Adelaide CBD, North Adelaide, Western Suburbs and Adelaide International Airport. Places of interest, facilities and a host of other location based information can be added - incredible! |

| You could even manually create sales territories within Google Earth using the .KML version of our DAT product (please see the answer to Q8 before deciding this is the best option for your needs). This example shows central Brisbane with a small number of Postcode Areas manually assigned to territories by use of view properties within Google Earth, using the KML version of PC003QLDDAT - Brilliant! | |
| You can even search for addresses and view streets in Google Earth - amazing! | ![]() |
| The High Resolution version of your map(s) contains full detail of the background maps. Owing to the high level of detail and very large size of Australian States, these are necessarily large files. Some computers and particularly lap top computers may take a long time to display the High Resolution maps. | ![]() |

| The following examples illustrate a number of approaches to creating,
displaying and using postcode area geography in the context of territory or franchise
mapping, we hope you find them informative! You can find an overview of things to take
into account when planning such an exercise on the site here. Seen here an illustration of our Postcode Area data deployed in a sales territory / franchise application. Commencing with fifteen existing businesses, we have used their addresses including postcode, to automatically generate sensible territories for each, using adjacent postcode areas. In this case we have used total area in square kilometres to best apportion territories. If we had other data, for example population density, mean income or other value of interest, we could have used one or more to create the territories. You would require our GIS Data products to undertake such work yourself, and of course you will need a GIS application and the expertise to run it. Alternatively we can undertake such tasks for you. Please take a look at our custom mapping services section for an overview of custom mapping services. |
|
| In this example, postcode areas for New South Wales and the Australian
Capital Territory have been assigned to twelve regions, each having, as close as possible,
a similar number of homes and each consisting only adjacent
postcode areas The size of the resulting regions varies greatly - relatively small areas in metropolitan Sydney to huge areas in outlying parts of the state. This reflects the density of housing. A franchisor would often modify the license costs of individual regional franchise areas to take into account variables such as travel or distribution costs, in addition to the variation in target numbers. |
|
| This is a customised version of one of our City Map Series Perth WA; it incorporates "customer
supplied" data listing the addresses of business
with which they deal; we convert such lists into geographical points, format to suit
including custom backgrounds (a Bing Street Map in this example) and supply in the same
searchable format as out standard Map Series range. It costs a little more, but that's how
it is with something tailored to fit your specific needs! A detailed view is below: |
|
| Here another set of customer addresses
has been processed to allow them to be seen on a map, the red points are the customer's
clients. This allows us see all sorts of additional information. In this case (right) our customer is an agent for four manufacturers and likes to visit her clients at least every six months. She can only travel safely with the merchandise of one manufacturer at a time. Here all her clients overdue a visit are shown as triangles, so it is evident that a group of four clients using manufacturer 4 products can be visited efficiently in a single trip as a priority. |
|
| "Business activity" may also be
utilised. The following examples use the most
recent ABS data on business activity available at postcode area level. The map to the right shows the total number of businesses having at least one employee, for postcode areas around Sydney, NSW. Please note: The data available for download from the ABS website is not directly useable for mapping purposes owing to the structure and format of it's "postcode" attribute. MapMakers have cleaned up the ABS data to allow it's use for map creation, as shown by the illustrations here. If you wish to use our improved version of the ABS data there is a $325 ex tax data access charge. You can of course undertake such a task yourself and supply us with your own version, thereby avoiding the data access charge, but we cannot be responsible for any errors or omissions which your version might include. The raw ABS data can be downloaded from the ABS site here. There is an additional note on the ABS business data currency here. |
|
| We are sometimes asked whether we can generate sales or franchise
territories based on "number of businesses".
The process is similar to that required when using Census demographics, illustrated above. However the ABS data
concerning business activity tend to be less comprehensive than Census data, though maybe
entirely adequate for many purposes, as is illustrated in this and following examples. This map is the result of processing MapMakers Postcode area data PC002NSWACTDAT_Org to include the total number of employing businesses, and generate 9 sales territories, each of which has a similar (and thus fair) number of businesses in it. The numbers on the map show the total number of employing businesses in each territory based on the postcode areas within. As always, if you have your own in-house data relating to business activity of specific interest, or wish to compile such data from other independent sources, we could use that in a similar way. |
|
| Of course you may wish to target only business of a certain size. For example a coffee machine leasing operator may feel that their most reliable and well priced machine is ideal for businesses with perhaps 20 employees (though probably too expensive a proposition for a sole trader or really small firm). This map shows where such businesses, employing between 5 and 19 people, are distributed and how many are primarily located in each postcode. The data could be used in a similar way to the Territory map above, to produce sales territories for potential franchisees. |
|
| Data is also available for business sector category, and financial
turnover. This example combines both these types of data to map the distribution and number of businesses operating in the "Retail Trade" sector, but only those operations turning over less than $150,000 per annum. Here's a quick reference list of the default ABS "Industry Divisions": Agriculture Forestry and Fishing |
|
| There is also a category for "none
employing" which can be taken to represent sole traders and other single person
businesses. This map shows the distribution and numbers of such businesses operating in the "Personal and Other Services" sector from the default list reproduced above and for the same area as the four previous maps. Of course if you are considering undertaking a territory mapping exercise using such data, it is important to feel comfortable with what the raw statistics are likely to represent. As with all ABS data, care is taken to protect the privacy of individuals and businesses, so the user must take some time to consider where the information of specific interest is likely to reside in the general statistics available. In this map, the location of Kings Cross is marked with an "X", but there are obviously many types of businesses which would be grouped together in the same very broad category of "Personal and Other Services"! Note: The ABS has revised its standard geographical classification. Postcode level data is not available after 2007, with most recent business data (2009) only compiled to SLA (similar to a local government or council area) level, which is of only limited use for most territory planning work. However higher resolution data may become available in the future, through the ABS or another federal agency (the accountable custodian agency for such data has been unclear in recent times; "business.gov.au" seems to be where such data should be available, but publicly accessible data seems very limited at the time of writing - January 2012). We monitor ABS and other relevant site activity regularly and will continue to post updates as / when available. |
|
| We can create territory / franchise area maps and map series to meet your
requirements, for example to include with your prospectus' for potential franchisees. This and the following two illustrate a range of different styles.. |
|
| ..but all using the same objective; areas based on postcodes which contain a population of resident women numbering between 20,000 and 30,000. | |
| Your logo and any required corporate information can be included, either embedded in the map or supplied as separate documents. | |
| This example shows how our Postcode data can be integrated with data from
other sources (in this case Census 2006 population data) and the results displayed in Google Earth (which is free!). Here we have analysed the Census tables and assigned the total population of a particular age range and sex. The Postcode areas are then coloured on the basis of the numbers in the specified group: Dark green - high numbers; yellow - medium numbers; and red - low numbers. |
|
| You can modify the display to show which Postcodes have populations of most interest for the particular population group - higher populations represent a more desirable target market in this case. |
|
| We can even enhance the results and explore the contained information
further. Here we have calculated not only the total number of people in our group of
interest, but their population density for each postcode area. Obviously a key
consideration if we are considering targeted mail drops or fixed advertising campaigns.
Note how some Postcode areas with seemingly low numbers (red through orange) actually have
quite high densities, and some high population numbers (darker green) quite low densities.
This is another example of the insights available through visualising data by geography, taking full advantage of the free Google Earth application! |
|
| Here's another example where sales volumes from a national network of dealerships are incorporated into our Postcode data. It shows the geographic extent of sales made by each dealer, the total sales (the bigger the dots, the more sales have been made).. |
|
| ..and just as importantly, it reveals in detail the large areas of
Australia in which the company hasn't recorded any sales at all - prime candidate regions
for sales expansion and targeted marketing campaigns. This is the power of geographic data, turning your spreadsheet or database records into information which you can immediately leverage to advance your business. |

If you still have unanswered questions after reading the list of FAQ's below, please complete the information request form. Alternatively, you're welcome to get in touch with us directly..
| Q1. In the PDF product series, can I search only for postcode values, or
can I look for suburbs and other places? A. You can search for both kinds of information. The flexibility of the search process is determined by the application you use to read the document. For example Acrobat Reader allows basic searching, and also has a number of advanced search options. Best to experiment and see what works for the kind of search you require. |
| Q2. Can you explain the difference between your
postcode map series product and the GIS data product? A. The Postcode Map Product is a PDF document designed to allow access to postcode area information, but without the requirement of specialised software. It can be utilised in Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free. It is ideal for interactive use, for example manual allocation of sales territories. The GIS Data Product is the same postcode area information, but requires a GIS application to use it. If you require a more interactive and analytical approach, this will be the best choice for you, but please study the information in the link provided. The following two questions may also be of interest to you. If you are unsure of the best choice, it may be a good idea to print a copy of these few questions and answers (select the text of interest with your mouse and use your browsers print command, checking the "selection" button) and further discuss your Postcode map requirements with your colleagues. |
| Q3. Are the maps available as
paper wall maps? A. A paper map is less useful than an electronic map as searches must be done manually. Also it is necessary to include a keyed index to allow manual searches on a paper map, which takes up a lot of space. The space saved in our products allows us to use highly detailed inset maps for major urban areas. All our products are in digital form. Also, we update our postcodes frequently. Digital maps can incorporate such updates rapidly and efficiently, and we have an Update Service available to allow you to take advantage of regular updates to our products. If we had printed paper maps, they would become out-of-date quickly. As a potential customer, we don't think you would be very happy about that! There is more information about paper and digital maps here, and two examples of the limitations of paper postcode maps in Q5 and Q6 below. |
| Q4. Can I print the Map Series out myself then? A. The Map Series is optimised for information searching within a PDF software application. You could ask a commercial printer to run off a paper copy from your Map Series PDF file. The best choice for this specific objective would be the High Resolution version of the Map Series Pro product. Often, users are interested in smaller areas of the overall map, and use the keyboard's "print screen" button to copy the area of interest shown in the PDF reader application. The resulting clipboard image can then be pasted into a new document or graphics application, and sent to the local office printer. |
| Q5. I've found some paper maps and a postcode mapping CD
on the Internet and they seem cheaper than yours. Why should I buy your products instead
of these cheaper ones? A. Some postcode mapping products based on open source (essentially "free") software are available. In our experience the postcodes included in such products are simply not up to date, despite suggestions to the contrary. For example you may see a claim such as "2010 version" and assume this to be a reference to the crucial postcode data. It is not; it actually refers to the version of the "freeware" used to display the postcodes. Only MapMakers Australia have the capacity and commitment to create and maintain up-to-date Australian postcode area data. In addition, if you need to have mapping capability on several machines, multiply the cost by the number of machines. Our licensing structure is much more flexible and almost certainly cheaper in the long run. We do not recommend open source code for serious work. Get a real GIS and accurate, up-to-date postcode area data - you're now in the only place where that is available! After all, you wouldn't buy a new car if it had an old engine.. If you're interested in paper maps specifically, you will find they probably do not include enough printed detail to allow you to see postcodes in urban areas. It is likely that you will have to buy several additional maps if you are interested in postcodes for a whole state, if indeed they are available at all. That probably means you will end up paying more for paper maps than for our digital maps, and of course searching is a manual process with a paper map (see answer to Q3 above). It is also likely that a paper postcode map will be even more out-of-date than anything on disc, whereas our digital Postcode data and maps are kept up-to-date frequently. |
| Q6. We once had a paper wall map of postcodes which cost
$25 from memory, but I can't find them anywhere. A. These were produced about fifteen years ago by the Commonwealth mapping department and Australia Post. Postcode area information is no longer available from these agencies. Costs were subsidised by the tax payer and large printing runs allowed the selling price to be set artificially low. However most were never sold, so the actual cost per copy sold was enormous. You could try looking on the Internet auction sites, but even if you find one, it will be hopelessly out of date. |
| Q7. Can I overlay other information, like map pin symbols representing
customers, on your maps? A. The PDF maps could be used in this way, but it would require you to have a software application which provided this functionality (that is, an application which allows editing of PDF documents). For users with sophisticated or value added requirements, it may be worth considering the GIS data version. You will also need a GIS application to make use of it. |
| Q8.
Can I use different colours to differentiate groups of postcodes we want to consider
together? A. The most effective way to do this is by using a GIS software application, especially if your requirements are complex and / or extensive. However if you wish to do this manually (for whatever reason!), it is possible to do so using Google Earth (which is free) and our Data Series products in KML format - we've included a brief example here.. |
| Q9. How current is the postcode information on your maps? A. Up to date for 2012. These products are validated against the definitive Australia Post database. Have a look at an example here. You can download a copy of the Australia Post list here. You can also confirm the date to which our postcode data has been updated against this definitive reference here. |
| Q10. If I can use GIS data in Google
Earth or Google Maps for free, why would I ever consider buying a GIS application? While Google Earth and Maps are fabulous innovations (and free), you should be aware of some limitations which may affect how your objectives can be achieved through these applications alone. First, the format used by Google (KML) is by default limited to two data attributes, plus an optional third ("height") value for Google Earth only (this is how the skyscraper maps are created). We do have the capability to expand on this limit to some extent (see the postcode sample on our home page for an illustration) - contact support if you require further details. While we produce KML format for successful use in Google Earth, which is a stand-alone application, using the same KML files in Google Maps has some limitations over and above those of Google Earth, which is a script based application program interface intended for use from within a browser. For example there are object size and complexity limitations for rendering in Google Maps, explained on Google's site here. Some further restrictions on KML element support in Google Maps are also relevant as explained on Google's site here. Owing to the "open" nature of the Google community, there is a Supplementary License Agreement required for supply of our Data Series in Google KML format. The License wording is illustrated here. So great for display and fun to use, albeit with significant limitations especially in Google Maps, if you wish to engage in anything analytical using spatial data, it can only be achieved using a GIS application. Of course we can perform such analysis on your behalf and supply the processed results in KML format for you to use. As Google say on their web site in relation to Size and Complexity Restrictions for KML Rendering in Google Maps: "Google Maps currently has specific limitations to the size and complexity of loaded KML files... Note: these limits are temporary and are subject to change at any time." |
| Q11. How accurate is your postcode data? A. Following is the pertinent Postcode Map Series "small print": <State and/or Territory name> Postcode Map "n" of an Australian series
of 7. |
| Q12. I'm only interested in GIS data for Sydney, can I just license that
limited area? A. Yes, we can supply whatever you require. We have a Custom Postcode Extraction Service to meet your needs |
