Census 2011 Support

We are increasingly asked about plans to support and integrate the results of the 2011 Census into our Census Enhanced Postcode Data product range. The brief answer is "yes", we plan to fully support and integrate the results of the 2011 Census into our products. Following are additional notes which we hope will assist you plan your existing or future postcode geography requirements:

1. MapMakers Postcode data product content for 2011 Census. Each Census has some variation in the questions asked when compared with previous Censuses - the inclusion of questions about Internet connectivity in the 2006 and again in the 2011 Census is a good example. The questions asked in the 2011 Census were the same as those in 2006. Until the results are compiled and published, we cannot know for certain which of the existing data fields will be included in our 2011 products. However we intend that all current variables will be replicated as far as is possible, based on published data. In addition we will review all 2011 results with a view to incorporating any new variables we consider to be of interest to our clients.
2. Upgrading from MapMakers products based on the 2006 Census to products incorporating 2011 Census data. We intend to offer existing Census Enhanced Postcode Data Licensees generous discount rates to update to products incorporating 2011 Census data. The details are still to be finalised, but two upgrade paths are likely: a) For current Postcode Update subscribers, your geography is automatically updated so only new attribute data is involved; as an update subscriber, you will be offered the geography with new 2011 Census data at no additional cost. Whether we maintain distinct products with identical geography but attribute data for different Census years, or include multiple Census attributes in one geography data set, we are yet to determine - we know the sheer number of data fields can be problematic for users of some popular GIS packages, even with just the 2006 data. b). For clients with a static License (i.e. no geography updates since the time of Licensing) we envisage a sliding scale of update charges based on Postcode Update rates adjusted for time elapsed since Licensing. This structure will aim to be fair on clients who have taken advantage of the Postcode Update service, and accommodate the cumulative changes incorporating new postcodes, boundary changes and deletion of redundant postcodes over time. Details will be posted here as they are finalised.
3. New customers. For those considering one of the Census Enhanced Postcode Data products, but who perhaps feel it might be better to wait until release of the the 2011 Census versions, we've thought of you too! From August 10th 2011 any new Licensee of any Census Enhanced Postcode Data product will automatically receive a 2011 version at no additional cost. This will be forwarded to you as soon as the products are released. The postcode geography will be the same as that originally licensed (i.e. no postcode geography updates) but will be populated with the same or closest equivalent attributes to the 2006 version first licensed. That way you can work with the latest data available right now, and transition straight to 2011 data as soon as it is released - we think that's a pretty good deal!
4. Time line. The 2011 Census was conducted on August 9th 2011. While preliminary results in the form of press releases are typical in the few months following each Census, finalised and compiled data are scheduled for release in June 2012. As it is these final data which are incorporated into the MapMakers Census Enhanced Postcode Data products, we will not be making products utilising the 2011 Census results available until they are in final published form. Naturally we will be monitoring progress with keen interest and have plans in place to undertake necessary works rapidly, following publication of final 2011 Census data. Progress and time line updates will appear on our site here as and when appropriate. Additionally all affected Census Enhanced Postcode Data Licensees will be notified via e-mail as soon as our 2011 based products become available. January 2012, according to the ABS, "Core demographic data items will be available in the first data release (21 June 2012)" - follow the "Release Plans" link located near the bottom of the left hand contents section; assuming this date remains in effect and that the first release contains all the we require, we would anticipate all effected MapMakers data products to be available for supply within one month of the ABS release date.

 Custom Postcode Ranges for Census Enhanced Data Products

This option allows you to pick and choose Postcode Areas from anywhere in Australia to meet your specific business needs. This may be of particular interest if your area of operation is confined to a region, a city or two, or just a single Postcode.

How it works. Send an e-mail to Sales including an attached spreadsheet or database table listing each postcode required and ideally its State or Territory as a separate column. Also please specify your required data format (if it is not listed in the third column of the table below, we can almost certainly produce it, please contact us for more information). The State or Territory may be required as some Postcodes can and do legitimately occur in more than one State / Territory. If you prefer not to include a State or Territory in your list, you will receive all Postcode Areas with that designation, so you may receive more Postcode Areas than there are unique postcodes in your original list. Your custom postcode areas will be supplied as an encrypted executable file, requiring pre-payment for release of your encryption key.

Owing to the unique nature of this option, our Postcode Update Service is not available. The only licensing option is Organisational.
