Huge volumes of data exist, covering just about any subject you can imagine. Much of
the time the problem is knowing what is "out there", and then how to get hold of
it! While MapMakers specialise in sourcing such data on behalf of clients with specific
requirements, we also develop and maintain a number of data sets ourselves. Below you will
find an illustrated data catalogue, with notes on origin, accuracy, suitable applications
and so on. Please remember, if it isn't listed here, it almost certainly exists somewhere,
and we can almost certainly track it down for you!
For many natural resource management
applications, the accurate definition of catchment boundaries is an essential requirement.
Just look at the number of Landcare and other community groups who include
"catchment" in their title! This map shows the Tasmanian government catchments
in red, and the much more detailed MapMakers "River Ordered" product. Click

This map shows catchments plus Municipal boundaries. You can download
a larger image (click on the map) in which the differences between administrative and
natural boundaries can be more easily seen..
Click this map for a larger scale, high resolution (detailed) version
of the catchment product..
The next three maps give an idea of how catchments are nested
progressively, and reflect the extent and complexity of the drainage networks contributing
to them.
This map shows only the MAJOR catchments (7th & 6th order).

6th and 5th order catchments shown together. See how progressively
more of the land is encompassed by progressively lower order catchments.

We have developed a range of value added products from our catchment
boundaries. This map shows one example of how water flows through the landscape following
a particular storm over two catchments. Click the map for a higher resolution

Many data products are available from State or Federal agencies or from software
companies. However these are often very expensive. MapMakers are striving to not only
provide highly accurate and useful data not available elsewhere, but also to drive
down costs...!
Data available includes many fundamental environmental data sets,
including climate, soil, and vegetation data. Prices for our data are as low as possible,
with custom data extractions being available
Rainfall distribution for Tasmania, viewed north to south. The higher rainfall
areas of the west are the reason for the State's self sufficient hydro electric status..
This data set shows the average rainfall in Tasmania's driest month.
By
clicking on the image, summary rainfall statistics and rain volume data for each
municipality will be displayed (the list is sorted
alphabetically to make locating your area of interest easy).
Depending on which browser you're using, either use your
browser's back button to return to this page when finished, OR the stats will display in
a new browser window.
